Rubbish Dumping and Thefts Strain Kyneton Charity Op Shops

Kyneton op shop dumping, theft and attempted break-ins are cutting into charity work at Foodbank and Uniting Church shops in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. Stolen donations, ruined goods and a damaged refrigerated van are costing thousands that could have bought food.

What Kyneton Foodbank is facing

Over the past year, rubbish dumping at the foodbank has increased. CCTV captured people rifling through donation bags left outside, taking saleable items before volunteers can sort them. Whatever remains is often ruined by weather and can’t be sold.

An attempted break-in and damage to the organisation’s refrigerated food van added more cost. Holmes told the Midland Express the van wasn’t a luxury: it let staff collect chilled and frozen food for locals in financial hardship. Damaging it hurts people who rely on those deliveries, not just the charity’s balance sheet.

Removal expenses for unusable dumped goods have doubled in twelve months and are now in the thousands of dollars. Broken, dirty and non-functional items can’t be resold and must be trucked away at the charity’s expense.

Volunteer shop manager Kathleen Wyatt said security cameras at the Ebden Street Community Opportunity Shop record people rummaging through donated goods weekly. Bags get torn open; wanted items disappear; leftovers are soiled or wet and go straight to disposal.

Wyatt told reporters police now do regular drive-pasts after the shop raised the issue. She stressed that donors who bring quality goods are valued. The frustration is with after-hours interference and dumping, not with genuine supporters.

Council message on dumping

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has run campaigns before to discourage op shop dumping and theft. Director of assets and operations Dom Testoni urged residents to donate only clean, safe and saleable goods and to check with each shop if they’re unsure an item is accepted.

The council supports community op shops with disposal vouchers for unsaleable donations, but Testoni said the problem is avoidable if people respect volunteer time: don’t leave goods after hours, and don’t pick through bags meant for the charity.
