How We Maintain the Op Shop Directory
Op shop directory Australia: Op Shops Hub is independent, not a charity and not the shops we list. This page explains how listings are built, updated, and removed so you know what you’re looking at when you search by suburb.
We publish guides separately from directory rows. A shop in a “best of” article is not paid placement. Hours still live on the listing page.
What we list
Charity op shops, thrift stores, and related second-hand retailers across Australia. Each listing aims to show name, address, phone, hours where available, a map link, and basic stock signals from public data. Donation-only bins and unmanned drop points are not listed as full shops. We cannot verify retail hours or volunteer safety on those sites. Seasonal pop-ups and one-day stalls stay out of scope unless a charity publishes a fixed address and regular hours.
Weekend church fetes sit outside this directory by design. Use the charity’s own event page instead. A Salvos Super Store in Tempe and a hospice shop in a country hall are both in scope if they have a fixed address and public hours. A clothing chute in a car park is not a shop listing.
How listings are sourced
Listings start from public business and map data, then get cleaned before import. Owner and volunteer submissions arrive via our contact form. Reader corrections matter when hours, phones, or closure status change. We don’t scrape social media stories for opening hours. Stories go stale fast. When Google and a charity’s own site disagree, we prefer the charity domain and note the gap if it lasts more than a week.

Quality checks
Closed or duplicate locations get flagged or removed.
Wrong-category businesses (for example a commercial furniture warehouse tagged as a charity op shop) are drafted for review. Sparse suburbs can show fewer listings until new data is verified. That is not a claim the suburb has no shops. Priority goes to listings with a verified Google Place ID, a usable address, and enough detail for a shopper to decide whether to visit. Thin stubs get reviewed or removed. Don’t treat a stub as “proof” a store closed.
A “furniture” flag means the store type often carries bulky goods, not that a sofa is waiting for you today. Stock signals are directional, not a live inventory feed.
What we do not do
We don’t take donations or sell stock. We don’t book pickups on behalf of charities. We don’t guarantee every hour on the page is current. Always call ahead for same-day visits. Need to donate today? We also don’t rank shops by paid placement. Editorial city guides are researched separately from directory rows. A Footscray listing and a “best of Melbourne” paragraph can disagree on vibe; the listing still owns the NAP and hours.
Update cadence
Listing data refreshes in batches rather than editing one shop at a time by hand. Weekly: reader reports and contact-form corrections. Monthly: re-check of high-traffic suburbs and holiday-hour changes. Quarterly: broader data refresh from aggregated public sources, with duplicates merged. Brand-new suburbs can look thin until a verified import pass completes. That is normal during expansion, not a bug in the directory.
If your suburb looks empty, send a contact-form tip with shop names and addresses. Reader tips speed the next refresh more than waiting for a quarterly batch alone. Include the shop name, suburb, and what is wrong. Clear reports get fixed faster than “this listing is bad” with no URL.

How listings relate to blog guides

We still link to the neutral directory for hours and maps when we recommend a suburb or chain. If a blog guide and a listing disagree on hours, trust a phone call to the shop. Guides are editorial; listings are data with a refresh lag.
City trail posts name suburbs so you can plan a Myki or train loop. The directory row is what you should open the morning you leave, because volunteer rosters still move.
Report an error
Use the report link on a listing or contact us with the page URL and the fix. We aim to review within about 48 hours. Peak periods around public holidays can take slightly longer. Include the shop name, suburb, and what is wrong (wrong phone, closed, moved). One clear report with a photo of a “closed” sign or a link to the Vinnies or Salvos finder is enough. Don’t submit the same correction five times in a day.
